In this security plan[1] dressed up in January 1942, this mine field is not included (any more?).

I am on a mission that takes me to the neighbouring village[2]. However, this village is separated from Rai Gorodok practically only by the railway line Sloviansk-Krasnyi Lyman from Rai Gorodok. It is a little closer to the enemy front and is therefore more heavily secured. I have crossed the railway track and stand a hundred metres from the edge of the village. I only have to cross a small snow-covered field and trudge cheerfully through the snow. There a guard shouts at me: “Freeze! Man, you’re standing in the middle of a minefield!” I stand rooted to the spot, then turn around and carefully stalk back in my own footsteps like a stork in lettuce. Then the guard directs me to the right path by shouting until I reach the village. That could have gone wrong.

In the village I report to the town commander, Captain Kolrep[3]. He greets me warmly and places both hands on my shoulders. After I have conveyed my official mission to him, he sends me to the starost’s house to spend the night. He is a rather young and handsome fellow with pitch-black hair and hazel eyes. He also greets me with a friendly handshake and shows his magnificent white teeth. Captain Kolrep doesn’t seem to trust him very much, because when we parted he warned me to be careful, saying that the starost’s brother was fighting on the Soviet side.
