After a quiet night, I return the next morning (28 Dec 1941) to Rai Gorodok, where a new order already awaits me: I am commanded as a liaison officer to the neighbouring village, where another division is already positioned. The village is called Nikolajewka and is occupied by a battalion of the Lower Saxon horsehead division.[2]
Such seams between two divisions are always “soft spots” in the front, because command areas end here, communication links are sparser and thus cooperation is more difficult. In our case, the situation is aggravated by the fact that this junction is particularly wide: between Rai Gorodok and Nikolajewka there is a five-kilometre-wide plain that is currently completely unsecured. There is not a single post along the entire route. The three existing bunkers along the road are empty. During the day the plain is easy to overlook, but at night it is completely unguarded. Therefore, I am to keep the link across this seam, with two tasks: Firstly, during the day to exchange information if necessary (with sledges) and secondly, at night from time to time to keep this gap between the two villages at least somewhat under control with shuttle patrols.
