The next day I bring the things I got for the two women downstairs. Unfortunately, I didn't get the perfume Marja had wanted. It had to be a certain English perfume that I couldn't find anywhere. Even in Berlin it was no longer possible to get everything, and certainly not goods from enemy countries. Sofia was able to pick up her thermos and perfume. She was a little disappointed about the unused thermos. She would have preferred me to have already drunk from it. She was very happy about the perfume until she suddenly remembered that it was something German again. With an inimitable gesture of joy and aversion at the same time, she slaps the bottle from one hand to the other.
Now that I have gas heating in my room, I can do without wood and coals. I always kept the kindling in a sack next to the stove. It was a favourite playground for mice. That will stop now. I give the coals, about two hundredweight, to the Kaczkowski family.
