The Soviets are trying with might and main to get their hands on the city. Again and again, they attack us with stubborn determination, sometimes in this place, sometimes in that. Again and again they are beaten back and suffer heavy, bloody losses. It goes on like this for eight days, without a break: Alarm at night, attack at dawn, return at noon. It is a hard time, but at least it is successful. For the third time, the radio back home praises our Berlin Bear Division. Only words cannot make clear how much blood and suffering and heroism are behind it. Sometimes, however, there is roaring laughter about situations in battle of unspeakable comedy. And with these liberating laughs we shake off all the fear we have endured.
And yet death always comes between us in a surprising way, so that we are stunned. Sometimes what happens is all the more tragic because it seems so unnecessary. We return from a counter-attack at noon. The panje cart on which we have carried our weapons and equipment is standing in front of my quarters, and the men are about to unload the things. One of the soldiers grabs his sub-machine gun to take it off the cart. The trigger catches on something and the shot goes off. Since the muzzle was aimed at the man, he collapses dead with a chest shot. Of course, it is an iron rule that the muzzle of a gun should never be pointed at the man....
