First leave from the front in Berlin, September 1942
The author in Berlin, with his mother, September 1942
My brother Joachim as Wachtmeister (photo of 1942 or 1944)

30 Aug 1942.[1] I’m going on leave. For the first time in one and a half years! And what all lies in between: Fights and battles, mortal danger, blazing heat and freezing cold, days and nights without sleep, trembling and jubilation of victory, failure and conquering the weaker self. As the leave was granted unexpectedly, this time I could only take a basket of grapes with me. Only the permission to wear the Ostmedaille is still issued to me.[2] My first leave as a fighter at the front. And so I drive towards my home town, decorated with the EK II, the Infantry Assault Badge in Silver and the Eastern Medal on paper (Photo).

I enjoyed the holiday and the reunion with parents and acquaintances. Trude, my holiday companion from Juist, even came from Pforzheim. To my and my parents’ delight and surprise, after eight days my brother also happens to arrive on leave. He is a sergeant with a flak unit in Russia.
