The next morning[3] the long columns set off. Direction of march: Donets river. The first destination of the day is Rai-Alexandrovka, which was hotly contested in winter. The roar of the battle for this village had reached us in Nikolayevka in the clear winter air.[4] Only the south-eastern part of the village was destroyed, and that completely. It is the part of the village that is bordered by the ravine through which the Russians repeatedly tried to enter the village. Tunnels were driven into the slopes and steep embankments of the Balka, which could not be reached by shelling. The Russians had literally clawed themselves into the ground here, so that even our furious attacks could not drive them out. Numerous soldiers’ graves, including that of a lieutenant colonel, bear witness to the fierce fighting around this gorge.
We take up quarters in the undestroyed part of the large village. I had ridden ahead to inspect the quarters of my platoon. The rooms of the houses are all freshly chalked, for the day after tomorrow is Sunday. A young woman asks me not to put so many soldiers in her freshly cleaned rooms or to move in myself with a messenger. At first I agree, but then I have to put in a gun crew because it’s a pretty big house. There the woman sulks a bit and pinches me in the chest. I pretend it hurt because my hero chest was bare as I was only wearing gym shorts. But she quickly put up with it, especially since I go there often to check up on things. The Landser are tidy and the house stays spotlessly clean.
