Two days later[1] I am again awakened in the middle of the night: "Get ready now!" The Ivan has broken through our defensive ring again, this time in a different place. Those disgusting alarms! I jump out of the warm bed, shiver and pull on my clothes, buckle up, grab my submachine gun and grope my way through the dark living room across the veranda to the outside. A few figures are already standing in the street. The groups are gathering. Half-loud questions, orders, announcements. Then my platoon arrange themselves and we march off. It’s off to Kurorty, a northern suburb of Sloviansk, the spa district of the city. We stop at the spa house, where the mission is discussed and prepared. The situation is as follows: Two kilometres from the town lies the small village of Karpowka, which we garrisoned heavily, for it is the last bar before the town and in a sense has the function of a fort. Here the Russian had now broken in again under cover of night and occupied part of the village. Only part of the battalion is needed for the counterattack. I am not needed either, because the use of mortars at night and in this situation is not very promising. So this time we sit around tiredly in the spa house until the comrades come back. They have driven the Reds out of the village again.
That night the firing of the heaviest Soviet artillery booms. I stand in front of our bunker and hear the deep, full-sounding firing like a tremendous drumbeat. Then a low, deep humming above me, and after a while the muffled impact far in our hinterland like a distant echo. There are always three shots. It sounds beautiful - if you are not affected. This battery is new. It fires only once a day or at night, and only a few shots at a time. It is the heaviest calibre and seems to be heavy on our staffs back there.
