After only a few days, a Stuka (dive bomber) formation appears. There are eight machines flying overhead in the exact direction of the launching sounds. We follow them with our eyes. Behind a protruding mountain ridge they form a line, one after the other they start to dive, shooting almost vertically towards the earth with howling sirens[1]. The yellow and white-grey clouds of explosion billow into the air as high as a house. First one by one, then a whole sheaf, and finally a wall of smoke mushrooms over the enemy position. One Stuka after another has dropped its deadly load and then climbed back into the sky with an elegant curve. Only one did not. It shot down straight as an arrow and dropped to earth like a stone.
