Outside it is pitch dark. Midnight has long since passed. It is getting chilly. I wrap myself in my blanket to sleep for a few more hours.
It is broad daylight. I walk the positions, return to my hole, phone the chief up at the end of the gorge and then expand my hole a bit. Above all, I can now cover the entrance so that not too many mosquitoes get in. Up in the village I changed my quarters. Since I now actually only come up there to sleep and have given my lazy orderly to the platoon, I don’t need the spacious room any more. I now live two houses further on in a small cottage occupied only by a woman with her little daughter.
Coming to the collection point this evening, I hear a harrowing story from the sergeant. Today at noon, a group of girls had returned from working in the fields to spend their lunch break in the village. They were walking in single file. The Soviets, of course, saw this and shot up the group of girls with a surprise mortar fire. Several girls were killed. One of them was considered the most beautiful girl in the village.[1]
