Carola is in Landsberg. She is staying at the “Elste” hotel[1], right next to the railway station. The hotel is fourth class, but I couldn’t find anything better as all the guesthouses are full. The room is run-down, the carpets frayed, the bed mattresses worn out and the bed linen threadbare and patched. Nevertheless, we are happy to be together for a few days. Carola arrived on Saturday and wants to stay until Monday. As soon as my duty is over, I meet up with her and go back to the barracks the next morning at the start of duties.
In the meantime, Carola has announced her arrival and appears in the barracks yard just as I’m standing in front of the company and giving all kinds of instructions. Carola passes by and disappears into the entrance while I dismiss the company. Like a roaring storm, the men chase up the stairs to their rooms and swirl around Carola like a whirlpool. Then she sits with me in the office and experiences the continuous coming and going of messengers, porters and NCOs, the incessant opening and closing of the door, heel clicks, reports, questions, orders, instructions. She doesn’t stay long, because we can’t have a conversation with all this hectic activity.
On the military training area next to the barracks, the newly formed companies are briefly trained. In addition to the usual field service, the programme includes a night exercise in which we practise securing a village at night. The outguard is stationed in the stables of a manor house, while the posts are positioned at all important points in the village. At dawn, we occupy a trench, where we then practise a penetration. Shooting exercises are also on the duty roster. The firing range is right next to the barracks block. Carola was once supposed to watch from the fence, but she doesn’t quite dare and walks past.
