Our mission is completed. Early the next morning, a lorry takes the cadre personnel to the nearest station. (The “framework personnel” consisted of the battalion leader (a captain), three company leaders (three lieutenants) and some sergeants and corporals). We had brought up the march battalion (replacements consisting of young recruits)[1] and were now travelling “home” again. The station building is badly damaged. While we wait for the train, I wander through the ruins and pull a few usable nails out of the wooden walls.
On the way, the train stops between stations. I look out of the window to find out the reason for our stop. My gaze falls on the railway embankment, which is covered with flowering heather. I get off the train and quickly pick a bouquet to bring back to Carola.
In Riga we have to wait for a ship to take us back to Danzig. We had been told that this could take a few days. That’s why we took up quarters in the “Excelsior” hotel and went for walks through the city from here. Beforehand, we obtained our marching rations from the responsible office and, after a long discussion, persuaded the NCO in charge of the delousing facility to spare us the prescribed delousing procedure.

- ↑ In the evening, the COC AGN, ColGen Schörner, informs the GOC 18 A, Gen Loch, “that the replacements that have now arrived make a very good impression, so that the army will receive a good increase in strength.” (KTB HGr N p. 522)
