Once we were also in a Greek Orthodox church[1] where a service was in progress. The circular room with its huge dome has no pews. The worshippers stand in a semi-circle around the priest, who sings with fervour and a little pathos from the great book of the Gospels in a full-throated voice. We stand with our heads bared and listen to the ritual in silence. Two cultures overlap here in Riga. On the one hand, Riga is a major European city in terms of the architectural style and mindset of its population. But alongside the buildings from the Hanseatic period, there are also witnesses from the old Russian era. Alongside the slender, soaring church towers of European design are the Russian Orthodox domed churches with their bulbous spires. And some old people still speak Russian.
