The crossing is stormy. I look astern and see the ship following us lurching violently. We are travelling in convoy again. On board our transporter are also four paymasters who are drunk from morning till night and lie apathetically on their luggage. I learn that they have been combed out of their previous unit as superfluous by a ‘heroes’ commission’ and are now travelling to Germany for a short retraining course before being assigned to a front-line unit. Boy, boy, what a mood they're in! But how hard and unjust fate deals with them! For four years, they've led a hamster's life as paymasters and quietly stuffed their cheek pouches in the rear. And now they are to join the infantry at the front! They of all people! Why them just them! Why don't they take the others! No, how unjust!

We just experienced a small sensation. A drifting boat is sighted off to the west. An escort vessel of the navy rushes up to the boat and takes some completely exhausted people on board. Word now came that they were Latvians who had tried to flee to Sweden from the area already occupied by the Russians and had got caught in this stormy weather. Without our help they would have perished.
