24 Dec 44. Christmas Eve in Gdansk. It is dark. I walk from one platoon to the next to take part in their Christmas celebrations. I give a short speech at each platoon. My last stop is the 1st platoon. Here, to my great surprise, the platoon leader, Lieutenant Harms, gives me a Christmas present from the company. It’s a book by Ludwig Thoma and a very nice copperplate engraving of the Gdansk “Krantor” crane.
By now it’s 11 p.m. and I go over to the mess, where we officers want to socialise for a while. I take a packet of Carola’s delicious biscuits that arrived in the post today. They’re the only biscuits I’m eating this Christmas, because I didn’t get a single crumb of the huge amount of biscuits the company received, because I was out all day and the distributors only gave them out to the platoons and the company squad. Now we’re sitting together in the mess. The battalion commander, his adjutant, the Orderly Officer and us four company leaders. I offer my biscuits, which find a particular favour with the commander. After the hustle and bustle of the day, we experience the silence of the room in which we are sitting as particularly soothing. Little is said, but there is a warm and cosy atmosphere over our get-together. We are all honestly tired, so we don’t extend our celebration for too long.
I’ve packed another large parcel with superfluous things that I want to send to Cammin. It includes my thick driver’s coat and the company’s Christmas presents. The man from Gdansk has offered to take it home with him. His wife will then take it to the post office.
