On leave in Cammin in August 1944

21 July–5 Aug 44. [1] Another fourteen heavenly days in Cammin before the definite departure for the front. I enjoy the comfort and let myself be pampered a little, rejoice in my prosperity, alternately wear my brown, grey, light and white suits or, on Sundays, my uniform with dagger. We travel over to Dievenow beach and go to the cinema in the evening. Carola lies behind the house in her bikini during the day. We stroll through the spa park and take photos. We visit the good old master tailor Sülflow at the market, who employs a Polish girl as a seamstress. We buy smoked eels and get wooden slats at the sawmill, whose owner has just lost his son in the field and who, in a surge of fatherly emotion, puts his arms around us both as if he is looking for a replacement for his lost child in us.[2]

We no longer argue at all. The otherwise not infrequent differences have blown over. Is it because we realise that the separation is imminent? Perhaps. But we’ve been in this situation before and still argued. I believe it is the grace of the marriage sacrament at work.
