Carola is here again. She has been given the same room she stayed in back in August. As always, I go to see her immediately after duty. We then go for a walk through the city. I spend the night with her, have breakfast in the hotel guest room in the morning and then go to duty. We use the afternoons to visit coffee houses and sometimes we go to a restaurant for dinner. The day before yesterday we attended evensong. Yesterday we bought a large picture of the Mother of God in a bookshop, which I want to give to my father for his birthday. This morning we attended a church service.
This afternoon I’m going for a walk with Carola. On the other side of the street there’s a non-commissioned officer talking to a couple of soldiers. We greet each other almost simultaneously. But while I salute properly and according to regulations, the sergeant only taps his cap briefly with crooked fingers. That is just too stupid for me. I go over and confront him. He stands nonchalantly on one leg and still gives cheeky answers. He’s from the military hospital, obviously feels like an old front-line fighter and thinks I’m a base wallah. I wouldn’t even hold that against him, but his behaviour was all too provocative. Are they the first signs of declining discipline? Or an isolated incident? In any case, I’ll take his pay book from him and have him report to my barracks on Friday. We have a weekly drill for soldiers who have shown themselves to be indisciplined during the week. It remains to be seen whether this drill is the right means of re-education, but at the moment there is no other. Last year, this facility was not yet necessary.
