Once again, my parents and Carola visit me in the barracks. At the moment, I’m living with a senior paymaster[1] in another room. At mealtime, I bring my dinner over. It’s sweet pasta again. I fill Dad’s plate which he begins to consume with relish. What a strange twist of fate: 28 years ago, during the First World War, Dad was a medical orderly in a military hospital in Thorn. Mum visited him there once and took me with her. We were sitting in Dad’s parlour when they were serving food. It was dumplings with prunes. Dad filled a whole bowl full for me, which I consumed with relish. Today it’s exactly the other way round.
