Yesterday I asked the Bavarian battalion commander, to whom I am subordinate, for a day’s leave, because I want to visit my train today. It’s based in Jurmalciems, a large village on the other side of the forest right on the coast. I walk through my right-hand ditch sector, which runs through open terrain and fields to the edge of the forest. This is where the forest path to Jurmalciems begins. About twenty metres into the forest there is a small dune on which there is a bunker with an artillery observation post. It is already protected by the forest, but still provides a good overview of the terrain in front of my company sector. I stop briefly to greet the observer and exchange a few experiences. Then I continue on my way. On the wide forest path that leads straight into the village, I take a wonderful walk through the tall beech forest. Unfortunately, it is only short, because after just two kilometres I reach the village, which stretches from the edge of the forest to the water. The commander’s bunker is located where the path emerges from the forest. I first go down to the adju, who lives with the orderly officer. Some sutler’s goods have just arrived and are ready here for distribution to the company. As I enter, I see the orderly officer setting aside two large boxes of lanolin cream. They were the only boxes that had come in this time.
The adju takes me aside: “I recently received a letter from the replacement division in Frankfurt/Oder saying that your case has been dropped.” It doesn’t impress me in the slightest. I hadn’t even thought about this story anymore. Then I report to the commander and go to my train, which is billeted in some houses in the middle of the village.
