8 July. Once again, assembly and accusation against the prisoners of war: “They steal like scallywags.” Yes, they steal, but from hunger, because the Russians and the red camp nobility cheat them out of money and rations. They do the same thing they see the Russians do every day. Those steal too. And while the Russian camp commander, Lieutenant Colonel Pankin[1], speaks the last words, Landsers come through the camp gate with stolen wood and coke, slam the combustibles audibly in front of the kitchen and listen calmly to Pankin’s last closing words.
Russians and Germans cheat each other at the food reception. The entire Russian camp staff eats from our rations.

Bread must not be baked until 12 hours before it is distributed. Then it’s still moist and heavy. The Russian is saving money. But at the moment the food is better. We get flour soups. But instead of flour, grain is delivered. The camp is supposed to mill it themselves.
When a company has trouble paying the rental fee for POW labour, it cuts the percentages and thus saves money on labour wages.
The norms system means piecework for life.
For a few days, I tried to get more food from the kitchen - through second helpings. But the constant thought of food, the lurking for the cook, the peering at the others who were looking for more food created tension and restlessness and made me hungry all the more. I give it up again.
