The path leads up a steep slope right next to the village, which, to make matters worse, has a hairpin bend. The teams take on the slope at a gallop and the brave horses brace themselves with all fours in the ground. But one team after the other overcomes the almost eighty-metre-high steep slope. Some pause at the bend, some climb through in one go until they stand at the top, nostrils snorting and flanks quivering. Poor, afflicted, innocent creature! Eventually they are all at the top, and after a breather for the brave horses, we move on.

The next morning (27 Oct 1941)[1] brings the first wear and tear on strength right at the start of the march.
