The Ivan has not managed to reach the village of Preobrashenskoje. In the morning we are moved to the southern edge of the village, briefly inspect the effects of yesterday's Russian fire raid and then close in on the fighting troops. The front runs between our village and Krasnopawlowka.[1] We stop at the last group of houses. Outside in the fields they are fighting, i.e. our soldiers are lying there in the mud, because they can't get ahead.
Since the houses are densely occupied, we don't have much choice and have to move into a dirty, poor, smelly croft. It is inhabited by an old man and his daughter, who is about 28 years old. Apart from the kitchen, the cottage has only one room, and that is a living room, stable and barn at the same time. It is not uncommon in Russian villages for chickens, piglets and rabbits to live in the kitchen. Under the only bed is a pile of grain where the cat sleeps. For us, the floor serves as a sleeping place, while the Russian sleeps on the stove with his daughter. When the daughter climbs onto the stove in the evening, interesting insights present themselves. The people are really poor, because the daughter wears only a skirt.
