Summer is coming to an end. The mud period gradually sets in. The advance continues, but the division's daily marching rate becomes less and less. Even today (19th?[1]) it has been raining all day. The roads are soaked. The units have moved into the villages and are waiting for better weather. The houses in our village are crammed with soldiers of all arms. I have taken shelter in the quarters of an anti-aircraft captain whose 2-cm guns have taken over anti-aircraft protection in the area of the village. The captain and his battery squad are in the living room, the Russian family in the kitchen. They are three middle-aged women. Outside the rain is pouring down. To escape the cramped conditions in the living room, I join the Ukrainians in the quite spacious kitchen. During the conversation I discover another young girl. She is lying on a bed that is so cleverly built into a niche that you don't even notice it when you enter. I sit down on the edge of the bed with her. She has leaned sideways on her elbows and bent slightly forward. Her little dress is quite revealing and I can see that it really is a girl. The evidence was, in a way, tangible. A cute girl, maybe 17 years old. She doesn't move or speak a word, but she smiles at me trustingly and expectantly. I don't stay sitting for long, because the whole family is in the kitchen and I don't want to make a bad impression.
