Again the ride goes over endless steppe paths. At times we also ride off the paths across the trackless steppe. A few hundred metres before a village we come across an anti-tank ditch. We manage to cross it on a rickety bridge, rush into the village at a gallop, jump off the horses and hurry to the nearest houses. According to a set plan, I always leave three men with the horses while the others quickly run into the houses. My men are mighty eager. Once, when I happened to enter the house immediately behind a Landser, the first thing I hear him ask as he enters the parlour is, “Jaiki?” (Do you have) eggs?[1]
In this village, a Russian approaches us and leads us to a pond surrounded by thick bushes, where the Soviets had sunk several machine guns during their retreat.[2] Then he shows us another barn where we find three anti-tank rifles and a heavy machine gun among other material.
The rifle patrol operating on the other side of the advance route has had more success. It has combed some woods these days and taken 53 prisoners.[3] I can only show three prisoners apart from the weapons found. If I were as clever as a career-minded achiever, I would have simply taken all the tangible men as prisoners along the way. Suspicious they all were, if you like. Besides, no one would have asked where they came from. Then I would have taken at least 20 prisoners. But the way you do it, sergeant, you’ll never be anything.
