Legend

We take over the positions and bunkers that the Ostmärkers had abandoned. Lieutenant Rasche's rifle company, which carried out the attack, also had a heavy machine gun platoon from my company attached to it, under the command of Lieutenant NN. I now joined him. I go with a machine gun to a position that is in the focal point of the front: We secure the village road at the point where the front cuts through it. Here, two houses have been blown up and levelled, leaving a gap of about eighty metres in the row of farmhouses. This strip of no-man's land separates us from the Russian positions that lie over in the next house. Our position is a metre-high wall of beams reinforced by sand deposits. It leans with its back against a massive barn, the brick wall of which is broken through here, so that one can crawl through this hole from the barn into the position and vice versa without being seen. At the right corner of this barn there is an additional light machine gun as flank protection, on the other side of the road there is an 8.8 anti-aircraft gun, a 5-cm anti-tank gun and several light machine guns.

By now it has become dusk. I look over at the Ivan. The Russian has drawn a continuous trench across the road. We only have single positions on our side. Over there nothing is stirring. Only at a point opposite us is fine, thin smoke rising from the earth. So that's where a bunker is.

Here day and night, every hour, passes in tense attention. Inattention here means death. The positions here are so close together that in the event of a surprise advance the Russian would be in our midst before we could get a shot off. This is especially true for possible raiding parties with the aim of taking prisoners.

But the front remains quiet. Only once do we take the bunker, from which smoke had risen, under mortar fire. We also hit the trench, but the effect seems not to have been great.
