As I walk around the strongpoint today, I hear engine noises in the woods.[1] They have a suspiciously low tone. I stop and listen to this hum. Tanks? Tanks in this forest? But why not, they can drive along the swathes. Besides, in front of our bunkers on the east side there’s only small pole wood that they could easily roll down. It wouldn’t be the first time that the Russians attacked with tanks in a terrain where we didn’t think it was possible. I listen again. No doubt about it, they are tanks! That sounds really great.
The tanks hum more and more insistently. There are several of them, they seem to get a little closer every night. We hear the sounds more clearly underground in the bunker than outside in the open. Early this morning, one of our sentries spots the first tank. It was at the end of a swathe, hunted out a shot between the trees of our base and then retreated again.
