The red patrols had lately become more and more frequent, larger and more intrusive. That's why I get the order to advance into the forest with a patrol and find out what's actually going on in the depths of the forest, and whether the Russian has already established himself on this side of the Donez. The river here curves away from the steep slope, and this curve, about two kilometres deep, is covered by dense swamp forest, into which I now advance with my six men. I first use the forest path on which we had recently followed the Russian scouting party. It winds its way through the undergrowth in long, faint twists and turns towards the Donets. The damp soil allows the vegetation to flourish. The weeds grow tall, and bushes and coppice are so dense that in places you can't see fifty metres ahead. I have the two tank wrecks we pass again examined this time. They are empty. Now I leave two men here and turn left at a right angle from the path, following a marshy stream that runs roughly parallel to our positions. But I find neither Russians nor traces of them. I therefore return to the tank wrecks. We now follow the path again, which runs towards the Donez. After a while the forest becomes thinner, the undergrowth sparser. Soon we have reached the edge of the forest and are standing in front of a wide meadow area, which is only covered with individual groups of bushes. We are at the floodplain meadows of the Donets. The river is still a few hundred metres away and can only be seen in a few places. On the other side of the river, the dense forest reaches right up to the bank. There is no sign of Russians, but no doubt they are watching us from the other side of the river. I return and report my observations to the battalion: The forest is free of enemies. The largely damp ground probably doesn't allow the construction of a position. So the enemy patrols are coming from the opposite bank of the Donets, crossing the swamp forest and lying in wait in front of our positions.
