12 May 44. My ambulance holiday is over today. A wonderful time lies behind us. Four long weeks full of happiness. We savoured every day as if it were the last of our lives. I think back to our lovely walks to Soltin, this quiet, idyllic village with its duck pond. I think of our walks on Island Gristow, where we sat on the steep bank and looked out over the water of the Bodden. I think of our evening walks around the town, along the old town wall, past the brewery and the fish smokehouse, the jetty and the impressive sight of the Luftwaffe flying boats landing on the water.[1]
