Now this time is over, because from 15 May to 1 July 44, I am detailed to a training course for convalescent officers in Potsdam-Nedlitz.
During the initial examination, the medical lieutenant colonel removes the elastic bandage I've been wearing since I was wounded. That was five months. When he pulled off the last layer of wrap, all the skin that had died off in the meantime came off. The foot looks dangerous with the almost raw flesh. That's very favourable, because now I need more time to recover.
Our duty runs from 8 o'clock in the morning until 4 o'clock in the afternoon and consists of lessons in all aspects of military life, from tactics to behaviour in public, from field briefings to sport. In addition, the medical treatment continues, which actually only consists of irradiation and massages. Opinions are divided on the purpose of these courses. Some would like to see more teaching, others would prefer to see more treatment. Some claim that nowhere is there as much duty as in Potsdam and Spandau. But it's not that bad. Berliners are allowed to live at home. They just have to be on duty in the morning. The granting of leave on Sundays and public holidays or for special occasions is also handled generously. Our course leader, an old-school colonel, brought up in the Potsdam spirit, an officer from head to toe, is one of the best officers I have ever met. With his narrow face, thin lips, monocle, taciturn and reserved, he makes an outwardly unapproachable impression. But he has an almost fatherly understanding for all our wishes and is extremely accommodating. But he doesn't show it to the outside world. He reminds me of my old regimental commander, Colonel Taeglichsbeck.
I live in a single room in the barracks. On Wednesdays and Saturdays I travel to Friedrichshagen to visit my parents.
Carola comes twice from Cammin. She arrives on Saturdays and leaves again on Mondays. We then go on nice excursions in the neighbourhood, drive to Friedrichshagen or sit down in an ice cream parlour.
Lotte is in Potsdam and calls the barracks twice. But I could never be reached. We didn't see each other.
