February[3] 45 field hospital Libau. Our enemies stand amidst the Reich. The divisions sent to East Prussia are fighting against a terrible superiority. Even up here in Courland, the brunt of the attacks carried out by red elite troops is almost unstoppable. True, they only made gradual progress, although their large-scale attacks and battles followed each other almost non-stop. The losses on both sides are enormous. The Russians, however, are constantly receiving fresh supplies, while our reserves of men and material are running low and even these few are barely getting through because our only connection with the Reich, the sea route, is increasingly threatened by Soviet bombers and submarines. The war is lost. All that remains is death or captivity. We face this situation with composure, but basically it is still a sad end.
I get a slip that says “military base hospital”. The doctor explains to me that this is what they call the military hospitals along the coast or near the coast. So I’m being cured in Courland.
25.2.45. I am sent to Field Hospital 331[1] which is in Edole. For several hours now I've been sitting in a little train[4] which tootles along the coast to the north. From time to time it stops at a small railway station.
