3 June. Depending on the kind of latrine rumours that are circulating at any one moment, the mood is at times on top of the world and at other times in the depths of despair. Hope still shimmers through the ridiculous discussions about whether we are prisoners or internees. Unbelievable how naive even officers still are.

Resuming the march from the Krottingen area via Rucava-Nica-Grobin.[1] Spending the night in barns, tents or under the open sky. During the march we are repeatedly harassed and plundered by the Russian guards. One guard wants to remove an officer's high shank boots on the road during the march. In the meantime we have developed a defensive strategy. As soon as a sentry tries to loot, the column raises a wild yell and hoot, so that the entire guard force runs together. Probably fearing a rebellion, the Russian officers then intervene against their men.
On the way, Russian officers rape Latvian girls. Comrades saw it with their own eyes when they entered a house during a march halt and witnessed it.
Only Wehrmacht property is legal war booty. Taking away personal property is robbery in violation of international law. In the German Wehrmacht, a sergeant I know received two years in prison for this. What the Russians have done in this area is hair-raising. The Americans were not much better in this field. But such and other offences and crimes are later blamed only on the loser.

At the latest from 06.06.1945 to 08.03.1946, from Krottingen to Salaspils, Bogg (pp. 17-48) and Herbert Schrödter were certainly in the same unit, because some extraordinary experiences are described by both, right down to the choice of words, in such a congruent way that they must be the same.
