28 Aug 47. A night shift in the concrete plant, followed by a day shift in the "Kalinin" factory, followed by a night shift in the concrete plant. That was 24 hours of continuous work without sleep, and in addition a shift without food. Slavery has been abolished in America and Africa. In the Soviet Union it has been reintroduced. Or rather: It never stopped here.
For the first time in four years I am treated for dental problems.
Landser pull themselves up the stairs by the railing because of weakness.
Recently it is forbidden to bring products into the camp and to cook them here. If you want to buy something - if you earn any money - you have to eat it outside. However, there are always ways to get around the ban.
Since recently, there is always a clothing inspection before marching off to work. This is because a commission has been reported.
The commission appears under the leadership of a colonel and inspects the camp. Overcrowded rooms have to be "cleared out". The food is inspected. Today, of course, it is excellent. In the cinema hall, the colonel talks to a Landser. He asks him, "How is the food?" Answer: "good." The surrounding Landsers grumble. The colonel asks more precisely, "Is the food soup or porridge?" (Soup ili kasha[1]) Answer: "Kasha!" Murmuring again in the vicinity. A somewhat more skilful man could, of course, have described the true facts at least suggestively, from which the colonel, who was certainly not stupid, would already have drawn the right conclusions. On the other hand, what else could this poor fellow say? Next to the colonel are the people from the German camp administration, and if the Landser had told the truth, tomorrow he would be beaten up by the camp administration's goon squad. And nothing would change anyway, because the cheating with the rations doesn't just start with the "German" camp management, but already with the delivery by the Russians. And uncovering all this cheating is simply beyond the capabilities of even a well-intentioned colonel.
As a reward for diligent work, the best workers are to be released to go home. Probably another of the clever propaganda campaigns by which the Russians hope to increase the enthusiasm for work among those who remain behind. Three are released from our camp. But they are not the best. Who would send their best workers away?
