Golaja Dolina Karte — map
Combat zone Donets region colourised by the author's hand, who was in this region twice: 11 Nov 1941–2 Aug 1942 and 9 Apr–18 July 1943
Situation unchanged until 21st through 23rd Nov (map date): 5./477 in Iwanowskoje (= Tichotzki), to which the author and his reinforced machine gun platoon were attached[1]

10 Nov 1941.[2] In our assigned section, Hungarians[3] are already in provisional positions. We are getting ready to relieve them. After a briefing with the Hungarian marshals, the usual dispersal takes place. The train and the writing room stay in the rear, usually in a village, while the combat platoons make their way to the front into the positions. The platoons of our machine gun company are distributed to the rifle companies as usual. My heavy machine gun platoon is reinforced by a heavy mortar group and then placed under the command of a rifle company.[4] The leader of my heavy mortar group is Sergeant Spremann.

On the whole, our positions run along the east bank of the Donets. In detail, however, they are very varied. Some positions lean against a village that lies on the river bank or on the valley slope. This is especially pleasant now in winter because the men can find shelter in the houses. Other positions run over bare, windswept ridges where the men have to laboriously dig themselves into the earth.
