November 1941 on the Donets: Map of the region around Ssuchaja-Kamenka and Tichozkij (grid line spacing 10 km)[2]

11 Nov 1941.[3] The rifle company to which I am attached is stationed in Tichozki. This small village lies in a valley hollow that runs parallel to the Donets valley, but is separated from it by an elongated mountain range of mighty height and width. On the broad, slightly arched ridge of this mountain range our positions will lie.

Our company approaches from the east, reaches the edge of the rather steep-sided hollow and begins to descend the slope to the village we see lying down in the hollow.

There is a rustling in the air, and a salvo[4] of heavy calibre mortar shells bangs into our vicinity. So the Ivan has by no means gone all the way back behind the Don. Moreover, he can obviously view the whole terrain. In the first surprise we had taken cover. I had instinctively thrown myself down in the rush of the shells, but immediately got up again, because the path was muddy. Now I’m filthy, and I’ve been angry about this hasty dive for a long time. Three other comrades had jumped behind a high straw storage clamp. At least they had stayed clean. But now we hurry to get into the covered valley. The second layer is already rushing towards us. The three soldiers from the clamp hadn’t gone ten metres when a grenade hit the very spot where they had just been lying.

We now enter the village without further incident and are now halfway secured, as the place is not accessible for targeted fire. We relieve the Hungarians. I am amazed to see ten to twelve men pouring out of every house, where we can only put six of us back in. They also come out of the positions in long lines with peacetime group strength, while we can only put out four to six men.
