20 Febr. The elections to the Supreme Soviet and the Nationalities Council[1] have yielded anywhere between 94-99%. In the Baltic 95%. Latvians tell us they were presented with 2 men to vote for. - In the Soviet Union two groups stand for election: communists (party members) and non-party members (non-party collaborators tolerated by the party). Both form a bloc. Lists of candidates are drawn up for the election by the party, the state-controlled trade unions and organisations and the army. The voter can then reject this or that list or strike out individual candidates, but whoever he votes for - they are always communists or party loyalists.
Our officer battalion has 532 men, of which 121 are distrophic = 24%. Average weight loss in the last 3 weeks: 6-8 pounds (3-4 kg). I still weigh 115 pounds (57.5 kg). Of course, there are still people who describe our rations as "not bad". These are our cookhouse wallahs, the Antifa clique and the informers. 60 g of peas in 3/4 litre of water would have been our main meal, but there weren't any 60 g in it.
Today's rations: 400 g of bread with a high water content, 120 g of peas, 110 g of potatoes = about 1200 calories, i.e. half of what we are entitled to. And even that is only on paper! When the rations say "meat", it is at best horse meat, but often a mixture of heads, intestines, lungs, sinews and stringy meat. As "fish" we get heads, tails and bones, waste from the canning factory in Riga. As "flour" we sometimes get the leftovers swept together in the magazine. That's the reality when they say we get meat, fish or flour or bread. But it is very much in keeping with typical Russian conditions when, on the other hand - as happened once - we were given delicious salmon as a bread spread for days.
An officer has sold his wedding ring for food. - Physical decay produces the first moral breakdowns. - German officers tear their heels up in front of Russian corporals.
The Russian is a master of improvisation. With a hammer and a piece from the lining of his cotton jacket, he completes car repairs. He is not afraid to tear open one hole somewhere to plug another. - The removal of our sick is just as hesitant, irregular and dragging on as the supply of food, mail and even work.
