9 Feb 46. 36 German officers arrive from Sweden. They had escaped to Sweden via the Baltic Sea after the surrender. Now they have been extradited from Sweden. They relate: The Swedish people are incensed by this violation of the right of asylum by the government and protested against the extradition. Protest rallies by students and trade unions. Bishops are also protesting. The newspapers are full of indignation. However, their sympathy is primarily with the Latvians who fled to Sweden. Panic arose in the internment camps. Suicides and self-mutilations. They queued up in front of the hewing block and cut off a toe with an axe. They are nevertheless taken away - with crutches. One of them cut his wrist with a razor blade while still in the bus on the way to the harbor, although he was sitting, like all of them, between 2 policemen. Hunger strikes and telegrams to the pope and the English king had remained unsuccessful.

Their internee life in Sweden had not been unpleasant. Excellent rations and military pay (as a first lieutenant, e. g., 75 kronor). For that they bought extra rations, clothing, tobacco, chocolate. They received mail and newspapers. Accommodation in the camp was good, treatment by Swedish officers friendly. Only once an incident with the Swedish population. Many had an affair with Swedish girls, and some stayed away from the camp for 2-3 days.

( Officially, we get 10 rubles a day here. In reality, however, nothing, because the money was "offset" against the living expenses in the camp.)

The "Swedes" were picked up by Russian ships. Selected shipboard personnel. Blond, jovial sailors, impeccable uniforms, good manners. But no sooner were they on the high seas than the frisking began, and when they arrived in Libau they were completely plundered. - In Libau lay the former German cruiser "Nürnberg".
