Now that the snow is beginning to melt away,[1] countless items of equipment come to light which have been lost in the back-and-forth heaving combat or which the soldiers have carelessly thrown away and which are now rotting in the mud. There are gas masks everywhere. Those gizmos caused us a lot of trouble. They were uncomfortable and were never used. The soldiers just threw them away later. Except that they continued to use the canister as a food container. They would also have thrown away the side arms if they hadn’t needed them as can openers (which was forbidden). In addition to gas masks, I found spades, tent halves, steel helmets, plenty of ammunition and empty shell casings. There are also rifle grenades. Of course, nobody dares to touch them, because they are sensitive, highly explosive projectiles. The amount of material that goes to waste here and elsewhere at the front and in the rear due to laziness and disorganisation runs into the millions. Orders alone cannot remedy the problem. It is a question of educating people to understand and take responsibility. There is no time for that now, and the troops, exhausted by incessant retreat battles, no longer have enough strength to pay attention to such things. Perhaps it would have helped if a vehicle had been provided to transport them away from time to time, if there had been any vehicles available for such purposes at all. Or maybe it’s just a question of organisation.
