To spoil the Iwans’ nocturnal advancement, our heavy infantry gun shoots surprise fire in the middle of the night. In the morning we see the result: there is a dead man lying in the snow over there. Tonight a scouting party from my company will go out to retrieve the body and conduct further investigations.
The action is underway. The scouting party is out. I’m at the front in the position. With me is an observer from the infantry gun platoon, whose guns are supposed to provide fire cover in case of need. But everything remains quiet. After an hour, the scouting party returns. They have found not one but two dead men and taken their papers. I report the return of the reconnaissance party to the battalion and send their leader to the commander.
