1.(15.?)5.[1] The anti-fascist Franz Tucholski turns up in Smolensk. - A large batch of Red Cross cards we wrote home for Christmas are returned by the NKVD because there were more than 30 words on them.
To combat vermin, our hair is shaved again. But we haven’t had soap for 4 weeks and fresh laundry for 8 weeks.
Next to the cinema hall is a heated drying room where we hang our wet felt boots on long crossbars to dry. In the morning, of course, there is always a big crowd when everyone picks up their boots at the same time. So one night, when I had to relieve myself anyway, I went into the drying room to take my boots right away. There sits some jerk of an anti-fascist, a short, stocky Saxon with a disgusting dialect. He’s the worst of the reds. He’s censoring our mail. He refuses to issue me my boots. - It also happened that the electricity failed again and we had to look for our boots in the dark. Then the jostling and swearing, which was already considerable on normal days, multiplied. - Handkerchiefs, footwraps or even stockings are no longer available. You have to look for rags somewhere. I have been using my only handkerchief for two years. Although I always rinse it carefully, it is already frayed and only half the size. - When our “cultural group” needs things for theatre or cabaret, someone always has to go to Moscow. Brushes, paints, sheet music, violin strings or anything else can only be found - if at all - in Moscow. - I hear that my long-time regimental commander, Colonel Haarhaus, received 15 years of forced labour.
