July 48. There are still 2 Austrians with us, although they should all have been released by now. There are also displaced Spanish children here (since the Spanish Civil War).[1]
Recently we had another seriously injured person. He had fallen from the height of a fully loaded wagon, onto the tracks.
Actually, today was our Sunday off. But already in the morning we see another empty goods train slowly rolling into the "ramp". This happens more often now. We are angry, but it is our own fault. Several weeks ago it happened for the first time that a goods train arrived on Sundays. Demurrage is expensive, and the Jewish nachalnik wanted to squeeze out a premium. We were taken out. Since we didn’t want to spoil the whole Sunday, we slogged away at the work and were finished by noon. And that was wrong, because when the nachalnik saw that we worked faster on Sundays, he geared up for it.
But this time I want to break the nachalnik’s habit. I suggest to the other brigades to work very slowly. Then this Sunday would be lost, but then we would have peace and quiet, because it would no longer be worth it for the nachalnik. But my suggestion was not accepted by the other brigades.
That was once again a very typical case. German stubbornness and the narrow-mindedness of the Landsers once again prevented a united approach. So the Landser brigades hurried along, as usual, while I deliberately let my brigade work slowly. The nachalnik threatened and raged in vain. We only finished towards evening. But the action will probably not succeed, for the cunning Jew has recognised our disagreement. But he is sick of me now.
The Germans’ disunity has often brought them severe disadvantages in captivity. But character is destiny.[2] They deserved no better.
About ten men are to be transferred to the Sloboda[3] forest camp for a few weeks to support the logging brigades there. My brigade is also with them. That means frisking 4 times, moving in and out of each of the two camps. I fear for my diary notes. So I get a thin board and nail it under the wooden ceiling of our living room, after I have pushed the notebook between the ceiling and the board.
