21 June 48. We have felled trees in the forest and now after work are waiting for the truck to take us back to the camp. The meeting point is a small forest village. Here we sit now, because the truck is late again. Some distance away, a young Russian plays an accordion. Young girls stand in a semicircle around him. Some of us also join him. It doesn't take long before the first ones start dancing, and soon there are about ten couples dancing on the village street. German prisoners of war and Russian girls. Among the peasants, the aversion to communism is stronger than in the cities. The peasants are the only ones who still have private property, namely their little house and garden. This private property is a thorn in the side of the socialist ideologists in the state leadership. They want to abolish it, and the peasants know it. The plan looks something like this: The agricultural land will be merged into huge agricultural enterprises. Even several of the existing collective farms (if they are small) will possibly be merged into one large collective farm. The peasants are to leave their villages and be grouped together in large communal housing blocks, from where they will be driven to their workplaces every morning by lorries. For the peasants, this meant the loss of the last vestige of freedom and complete dependence on state direction and planning.
I got to know an infinite number of people in Russia. Peasants and townsfolk, workers and intellectuals, men and women, young and old, soldiers and civilians, Russians, Jews and Mongols, freemen and convicts. I know them all and know that there are good and bad persons everywhere among them.
