16–18 Feb 43 (?). I’m going to Paris for three days with Lieutenant Gawletta. We stay in one of the most elegant hotels in Paris near the Opéra. We have lunch on the first day at the exclusive “Tour d’argent”. The restaurant is on the third floor of a house on the Seine, roughly opposite the Notre-Dame. A lift took us to the third floor. From our table we have a magnificent view of the Seine, the cathedral and the city. The menu starts with oysters, followed by various courses. The menu cost 20 marks. The other guests are diplomats, high French administrators, wealthy businessmen and German officers. A distinguished company, among them a very well-groomed, attractive young woman, who, walking behind her husband towards the exit, still takes a long look at us.
The purchases to complete my officer’s outfit, which is why we are here, take up the least amount of time. In the Wehrmacht department store I buy a pair of trousers and a few other small items. I even get a pair of braces, which I’m particularly pleased about, because rubber goods are in short supply. While I’m still standing at the sales table, Lieutenant Baumann suddenly appears next to me, a young, fresh, somewhat rotund and always cheerful, likeable comrade. Next to us, a purser is being served by a saleswoman. She brings a roll of rubber band (in short supply!), which the purser quickly makes disappear in his briefcase. Baumann has seen it too and says, “Yes, Schrödter, everything is still available for an invitation to dinner!” Out on the street, I then pay special attention to pursers and other base wallahs who are walking around here en masse. They are all impeccably dressed and wear uniforms of the best gabardine. That’s when I remember the order that gabardine may only be given to front-line officers and only on special certification. I look down at myself, for I am wearing the cheap uniform cloth made of Rayon. It’s a damned piggishness, isn’t it!
In the evening I go to the opera with Gawletta.
