26. Juli 1943
The very next day, I do my first unassisted shave. Since I wear my right arm in a bandage and only have one hand free, the procedure takes a long time and the success was also quite moderate.
Afterwards I try to get a telephone call to Krynica, where Sofia is now employed in a bookshop. After a long effort, I managed to establish a connection, but when I started to speak, the line was disconnected.[1]
Today I got a new bandage. Those wretched dressing changes! In a stuffy basement room of the military hospital, this torture goes on. A few comrades are ahead of me. We sit waiting on a bench, and the sounds of pain that the wounded make when the old bandages are removed make us very quiet. When the man in front of me faints, I too feel a slight nausea. Then it’s my turn. The medic unwinds the old bandage and now comes to the place where the bandage is starting to stick. I am just about to humbly warn him to be careful, when he has already torn off the bandage and the sentence I started dies with a hissing sound between my teeth. Of course, the rubber tube has also slipped out and is now stuck to the blood-yellow bandage. But now everything is over. My arm gets a fresh, spotless white bandage and is artfully put back into a triangular sling. I am allowed to leave now. Until the next bandage change!
Two older captains are also lying in my room. One of them has a testicular haematoma and is about to have another puncture. I’d rather keep my wound than an injury like that.
Tomorrow I am to be transferred into the Reich. So I was here for three days.[2]

- ↑ Perhaps the telephone exchange had been listening in and disconnected the call with the reminder “Private calls are not permitted!” In any case, such a case happened, because the author liked to re-enact this scene with his wife (as a participant in the conversation) and son (as an operator and to his greatest pleasure).
