Around three o’clock in the morning it gets chilly. Wearily, the men lean against the earthy wall of their foxholes.

Finally the morning dawns. Almost imperceptibly, the dark night gives way. It is still dark, but the sky is no longer that black. The shadows of the treetops already stand out against the sky. Impatiently, I look towards the eastern horizon and then at the dial of my watch, which is faintly phosphorescent. Shortly before three o’clock. At this time it begins to get light. And then the black sky gradually takes on a bluish colour, becoming brighter and brighter. Morning is approaching. Light is emerging. It is true that the most dangerous time actually begins now, because attacks usually start at dawn. But at least you can see the attacker. And then the sun is there! The day has begun.

My bunker at the foot of the steep slope lies in a patch of high forest. You can walk around freely here. The shelter lies at the edge of a bright sandy path. Unused for a long time, the grass is gradually beginning to overgrow it from both edges. Quiet and dreamy, this forest path lies beneath the softly rustling crowns of the tall trees, with whose foliage the warm summer sun casts its shadow plays on the path.

And then another day draws to a close. The blue of the sky and the green of the forest become darker and darker. But today the darkness does not frighten. Soon the relief will come. Half unconsciously, the ear listens if the sound of pattering footsteps and the almost inevitable clatter of equipment cannot already be heard. Another glance at the clock. Shortly before ten o’clock. They must be here soon. Relief! The heart seems to beat somewhat easier. Sleeping in a real bed for one night, without restlessness. Out of this forest and back among people in the village for a day. A camp bed in a mud hut is already a little bliss. How little a person needs to be happy!
