From Odessa we continue the journey in buses, always along the coast of the Black Sea.[2] The road winds its way eastwards, approaching the coast from time to time and then heading deep inland again when it has to bypass the mouths of the rivers and the large bays of the liman coast. We drive across wide fields and barren areas of the southern Ukrainian steppe, plunge into the often steep-sided valleys of the deep-cut rivers, climb up the slope again on the other side and continue to rush across the endless, undulating plateau until the next river valley swallows us up again. We take a ferry across the Bug and take a short rest at a small railway station nearby. Now we turn inland and head for the harbour town of Mykolaiv, which emerges from the haze in the distance. Down on the shore of the large bay, the shipyards and the cube-shaped iron framework of the docks rise up.
In NN we finally encounter parts of our division staff.
