This morning they are already closer again. They moved their positions forward overnight.
Bloupp-bloupp-bloupp-bloupp it goes over there. The clear winter air carries the firing of the mortars clearly over to us. “Cover!” Roum-roum-broukh-tsang. The splinters buzz. So here we go again. And I’m sitting in an open hole! The Ivan scatters our entire company section. Broum-tsang-tsinnng! A flash, a ringing blow to the eardrum and singing splinters above my head. A grenade has landed right on the edge of our hole. Gosh, is there a dash behind! Those rapid, singing, hissing splinters! One span further to the right and two life lights would be blown out. Then the surprise fire is over.
