Le Mans Karte — map

16 Mar 43. I am detached to a gas protection course in Le Mans. About thirty officers from the whole division have gathered here and are being trained practically and theoretically in gas defence. Lieutenant Baumann is also there. We have become friends and often go into town together after duty.

Yesterday we were strolling through a café looking for a seat when I saw a signals lieutenant sitting there with a beautiful French woman next to him. I know him. He also recognises me immediately, stands up and greets me very politely and friendly. We both took part in the sergeant aspirant officer training course in Slavyansk back then. I had already noticed him during the discussions because of his cheeky and hollow chatter. Now he is sitting here in the deepest home base, preened and pressed. He is a handsome fellow and good looking. The born saloon officer and base wallah. We exchange a few sentences and say goodbye again.

As there is no table left, we sit down with two French girls with whom there are still two seats vacant. My conversation partner is natural and impartial, and I once again have the opportunity to admire the inimitable, delightful charm with which the French woman easily masters the most delicate and delicate conversations and situations.

Today, as I am waiting at the tram stop, a young woman laughs at me from a window of the house opposite. I have a few thoughts. How hateful are we now? How do national pride and the need for love get along in women? There are many women and girls who are easy to approach. I don’t mean the ladies of the horizontal business, but quite normal girls from all social classes. Their sympathy is not with the German, but with the man. Or rather, they don’t care whether the man is a German if he turns out to be a likeable person. There are not a few nationally proud women who have honestly fallen in love with German soldiers. Here the eternal human triumphs over the situation of the times and the national consciousness.

A comrade who knew the area arranged a big meal for us in a restaurant on the outskirts of town. We first took a lovely walk through fields and meadows and then sat down to a three-hour feast. It started with oysters and continued with a fish dish and a poultry course to a heavy roast and ended with cheese sandwiches and coffee, in which various vegetable interludes were also inserted. The whole meal cost 12 marks.
