Apart from me, a lieutenant is also seconded. At night at one o'clock we were both standing on the road waiting for the wooden gas car[1] which was to take us to Deutsch Krone[2]. We wait a long time until it finally arrives. After a two-hour journey, we reach the station and board the waiting train. It is unlit and unheated. We try to get some sleep until the train departs in the morning.[3]

We have arrived in Cottbus and repair to the SS barracks[4], where an officer transport to the Eastern Front is being assembled. Our stay lasts only twenty-four hours.••• im Original weiter ohne Zeilenumbruch •••

  1. The autor uses the term Auto, but we can assume that they were on the road not waiting for a (staff) automobile, but for an autobus, cf. the Swiss term “Postauto” for a postbus. You could probably have waited for a company car inside the barracks,
  2. The station was certainly not Deutsch Krone, which is 140 km in the opposite direction, but probably Neu Bentschen, 30 km from Meseritz on the Poznan-Cottbus line.
  3. It must have been the train 604, leaving Neu Bentschen at 5.30 and arriving in Cottbus at 8.46.
  4. There were four barracks in Cottbus. There is evidence of two SS battalions, but a SS barracks cannot be identified. It may have been the SA barracks at Ostrower Damm on the corner of Wasserstraße, which was not far from the railway station.
