Alarm! The Russians are coming![1]

Situation map of 31 Dec 43 with marked position area of III./477[2]

In front of our positions, the terrain slopes very gently down to a broad, shallow depression and then rises just as gradually to the opposite side until it reaches its highest elevation about three kilometres away.[3] And over this elevation they now come in droves. One kilometre wide, the slope is strewn with countless small black strokes that slowly approach over the snow-covered surface. Now I can recognise the details of the figures. I can distinguish arms and weapons. The first black fountains of earth burst up between these swarms of ants. Our artillery fires between them, but the attackers are so far apart that this sparse bombardment is ineffective. They are getting closer and closer. I’m not firing yet. Calmly I let them run up. The shorter the distance, the better our hit results.

Our infantry guns begin to fire. Now the Ivans are already taking cover from the impacts. And then, when the heavy 15 cm gun roars between them so that the earth trembles, they dig themselves into the snow.
