Back to the Front

Meseritz |
I arrived here on Monday and today, Saturday, I already have my marching orders in my hands. They're working quickly here to get rid of the front-line soldiers soon. I don't like the garrison in Meseritz at all. The rear echelon spirit is particularly unpleasant here. Then there's the unfortunate reunion with Carola and the whole miserable weltschmerz mood that sometimes grips soldiers when they have to return to the front after a long period of leave. Because the longer the holiday lasts, the more you get used to all the peacetime comforts again, and the more painful the farewell becomes.
And to make matters worse, the last letter from Käthe Mühle of Königstein arrives in the midst of this depression.
On the last day, I also go to the hairdresser. As I'm sitting there among all the pleasant smells and the white-clad staff, thinking about my situation, the whole katzenjammer of my situation comes home to me.
