Christmas 1946. Work until 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Promised to be finished at 1 p.m. Dinner a little better than usual, with a Berlin pancake. Then a meeting in the big cinema hall to celebrate the red Christmas. An Antifa comrade read us the story of the poor proletarian child who looks through the windows of the capitalist villa and sees the mountains of presents under the decorated Christmas tree. In the text, class struggle slogans, hate speech, envy and - perhaps - a grain of truth. (If we were to put the idea of this story into practice now, the Landser would have to fall upon the camp nobility and slay them, because the wealthy capitalists here are the members of the camp nobility!) The meeting participants listen to the story apathetically. There is no sign of Christmas spirit. At the end a song is to be sung. I was standing at the very back of the hall and I don't know whether someone suggested the song or simply intoned it. In any case, the whole hall immediately joined in, and then the hall boomed with many hundred voices: "Silent night, holy night..." The red comrades in front gazed silently before them at the tabletop. Silently they listened to the song until the end: "... Christ the Saviour is born...!" Then the assembly broke up.

I know that inner peace is more important than outer peace. Nevertheless, I also ask for external peace and salvation from bodily distress. Oh, Mary, help, do come to us.
